Camper Fridges

The fridge is one of the most important appliances in a camper van. Keeping food fresh and safe is essential for autonomy and quality of life on the road. There are three main technologies: compressor, absorption, and thermoelectric, each with advantages and limitations depending on your travel style and electrical system.

12V/24V Compressor (Dometic CFX 35W style)

Compressor

  • Powerful cooling: reaches -7°F (-22°C), works as both fridge and freezer
  • Energy efficient: 30-45W average draw, compatible with standard solar setups
  • Works at any angle or incline, perfect for driving
  • Maintains stable temperature regardless of outside heat
  • High price: premium brands (Dometic, Engel) exceed $500
  • Compressor noise is audible at night in small spaces
  • Considerable weight: 33-44 lbs depending on capacity
  • Requires auxiliary battery of at least 100Ah for continuous use

Portable Compressor (Alpicool C20 style)

Compressor

  • Affordable price for a real compressor fridge
  • Portable and compact: easy to remove from the vehicle
  • Runs on 12V directly from the car or auxiliary battery
  • Freezing capability down to -4°F (-20°C)
  • Limited capacity: 15-25 liters in compact models
  • Inferior insulation to premium brands, higher consumption in hot climates
  • Louder compressors than high-end brands
  • Lower durability and after-sales support than Dometic or Engel

Absorption (Dometic RM 8400 style)

Absorption

  • Completely silent: no moving parts or compressor
  • Runs on three power sources: 12V, 120V, and propane gas
  • On propane, can run for weeks without consuming electricity
  • Proven and reliable technology used in RVs for decades
  • Weak performance in heat: loses efficiency above 90°F (32°C)
  • Must be level to work properly (3-degree maximum tilt)
  • Higher electrical consumption in 12V mode than a compressor fridge
  • Requires mandatory external ventilation for the gas system

Thermoelectric (Mobicool T26 style)

Thermoelectric

  • Very affordable: starting from $55
  • Lightweight and portable: only 7-11 lbs
  • Can heat and cool (dual mode on some models)
  • No compressor or gas, zero maintenance
  • Only cools 27-36°F (15-20°C) below ambient temperature, cannot freeze
  • High consumption for its capacity: 40-60W continuous draw
  • Useless in hot climates: if it's 95°F outside, inside will be 60-70°F
  • Not a viable solution for long trips or hot weather
